30 Karuma dam construction workers injured in accident

Thirty people have been injured following an accident in an underground access duct of Karuma Hydropower Dam which is under construction.

The yesterday accident occurred at about 7 pm when a truck that was transporting night shift construction workers failed to brake. It hit a wall and overturned inside the tunnel.

Mr Simon Kasyate, the spokesman of Uganda Electricity Generation Company Limited said that the accident was not a result of structural collapse; it was a motor accident.

He said the injured workers were evacuated to Lacor Hospital.

The dam which has been under construction since December, 2013, is nearing completion. It's is expected to produce 600MW.
