Uganda Withdraws Dr Kazibwe Candidature for AU Chairperson

The Ugandan government has resolved to pull its candidate Dr Speciosa Wandira-Kazibwe from the African Union Chairperson race, a move that could see Kampala throw its weight behind Kenya’s Dr Amina Mohammed.

Ministry of Foreign Affairs Permanent Secretary James Mugume said Uganda will back East Africa’s choice for the coveted post.

He said diplomatic talks were held with President Museveni and several diplomats accredited to Uganda on the AU matter.

The East African region had earlier resolved to throw its weight behind Uganda’s former Vice President Dr Kazibwe.

However, none of the candidates including Kazibwe got a majority vote in the recent elections held on the sidelines of the AU Summit in Kigali.

The polls were extended to January 2017.
